Vol. 272 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Post-Primary Education.

32.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposals for the provision of suitable accommodation for post-primary education in Donegal town.

Mr. R. Burke

The vocational education committee have been authorised to provide additional permanent accommodation to bring the capacity of the vocational school in Donegal town to 500 places. Proposals from the committee for the purchase of additional land in this connection are at present under consideration.

Does the Minister appreciate the urgency in this case? Post primary education is scattered over a number of buildings at present and is being carried on under the most adverse conditions. Would the Minister receive a deputation from the parents association to discuss the urgency of bringing forward this proposal?

Mr. R. Burke

The matter is at present with advisers as to whether a price for a piece of land is fair and reasonable and until this matter is clarified to my satisfaction there is no point in receiving a deputation. When I receive the report I will be in touch with the Deputy to see whether in the light of the result of that it will be necessary to receive a deputation.

Is the Minister aware of the delay which can occur due to wrangling over a piece of land? It could be years as easy as weeks if someone did not step in and expeditiously deal with the matter.

There has been a long delay already on this matter.

We provided all the necessary facilities for education in Donegal while it was being segregated under the separate headings but now we are looking for a comprehensive school under the new scheme.
