Vol. 272 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tidal Power Scheme.

10.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the possibility of generating electricity from tidal water action has been considered by the ESB or by any other authority; and, if so, the result.

I am informed by the ESB that any site for a tidal power scheme which is to have any prospect of commercial success must among other things provide a large tidal range and such sites are comparatively rare in the world. The only large tidal power scheme ever constructed, at La Rance, Brittany, has a tidal range of 39 feet. The maximum tidal range around the coast of Ireland is only 12 to 15 feet. Previous examination by the board revealed no possible site in Ireland.

The Board are continually reviewing all potential sources of electric power and the possible development of tidal power will be reassessed regularly in the light of technological progress and changing economic conditions.
