Vol. 273 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Derelict Sites Legislation.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that information is not available in his Department as to the number of derelict sites taken over by Dublin Corporation in a recent 12month period, he will take steps to ascertain if the Derelict Sites Act, 1961, is having the effect for which it was enacted and, if it is not, if he will introduce legislation to update it.

The purpose of the Derelict Sites Act, 1961, was to provide a fair but effective procedure whereby local authorities can secure the clearance and improvement of derelict sites which are in a condition injurious to health or amenities. It is a matter for the local authority to avail of the provisions as may be appropriate in the particular circumstances but I have had no complaint that they are unable to do so because the provisions are in any way unsatisfactory or defective. Accordingly I have no proposal for updating the Act.
