Pneumoconiosis is a prescribed disease for the purpose of the occupational injuries benefit scheme administered by the Department of Social Welfare. An insured person who contracts this disease which developed due to the nature of his employment can qualify for disablement benefit under that scheme as well as disability benefit under the general social insurance scheme, which is also administered by the Department of Social Welfare.
Hospital and specialist services are available free of charge from health boards for all insured workers. Holders of medical cards are also entitled to free general medical practitioner treatment and free drugs and medicines. These health services apply to persons suffering from pneumoconiosis and appear to be adequate to meet the need of patients.
