Vol. 275 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children Act Reform.

32.

asked the Minister for Health if he intends to initiate legislation to reform the Children Act, 1908.

The Government recently decided that I, as Minister for Health, should have the main responsibility for children's services including that of co-ordination in relation to child care.

I am immediately setting up a full-time task force, to report to me as soon as possible, on the necessary updating and reform of child care legislation and of the child care services. The group will comprise a number of outside experts and representatives from each of the Government Departments concerned with child care— Health, Education and Justice.

When will this committee meet for the first time?

The decision was made less than two weeks ago. As I said, I am involving outsiders who have shown particular interest in this problem. I anticipate that they will meet in a week or two.

Will they have attended the conference in Galway?

That is not relevant.
