While an index of the value of retail sales is compiled each month there is no corresponding volume index number. Using the price data collected for the compilation of the quarterly consumer price index it is possible to estimate an index of the volume of retail sales for the months to which the price index relates.
With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the estimated volume index of retail sales for 1973 and 1974 to date.
