Vol. 275 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug Uses.

5.

asked the Minister for Health if he will now consider curtailing the use of drugs in the amine oxidase inhibitors group because the use of these drugs can be fatal if certain foods, such as cheese or alcohol, are taken afterwards.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question by him on 21st November, 1973, in which I explained that the mono-amine oxidase inhibitors are available to the public only on medical prescription. I added that in view of the well publicised precautions, regarding the use of these drugs, I did not consider that I would be justified in making arrangements to curtail their uses. The position has not changed in the meantime.

Are clear warnings printed on all containers in which these drugs are packed?

The National Drugs Advisory Board are keeping a very close watch on all developments with regards to this and other drugs.

Is there a warning on all these containers in which drugs are packed?

It would be irresponsible for the prescribing doctors not to warn their patients of the dangers associated with this or any other drug.

Why not insist on a warning being printed on all these containers?

Because doctors are being reminded constantly of their duty in this regard.
