Vol. 275 No. 8

Ceisteanna——Questions. Oral Answers. - Driving Standards.

21.

asked the Minister for Labour how the regulations regarding daily driving periods for professional drivers relate to EEC standards.

Existing Irish legislation governing hours of driving of commercial vehicles is that fixed by section 114 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, which provides for a maximum driving day of 11 hours with a break of at least a half hour after 5½ hours continuous driving.

The EEC Regulation No. 543/69 provides for eight hours per day—with extension to nine hours in certain circumstances—and breaks following the first four hours continuous driving.

Under the Treaty of Accession, the EEC Regulation No. 543/69 will apply to domestic Irish traffic from the 1st January, 1976.
