Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Seat Belts.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is his intention to introduce the compulsory wearing of seat belts in motor vehicles; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

While I have no proposals at present for the introduction of legislation in the matter, I am keeping this issue under review. In the meantime, I would urge all motorists to have belts fitted and to use them.

Has the Minister any point of view himself about the compulsory wearing of seat belts? Is it his intention to introduce legislation at any time in the next 12 months to give effect to the expressed wish of the question? What is the Minister's point of view on the idea of compulsory seat belts?

I shall read the reply again:

While I have no proposals at present for the introduction of legislation in the matter, I am keeping this issue under review. In the meantime, I would urge all motorists to have belts fitted and to use them.

The question asks whether the Minister intends to introduce legislation to ensure people wear belts on a compulsory basis. Is it the intention of the Minister to introduce such legislation?

Do I have to repeat the reply again? Obviously, Deputy Andrews has not heard me.

I can hear the Minister very well.

We cannot engage in arguments at Question Time.

While I have no proposals at present for the introduction of legislation, I urge all motorists to have seat belts fitted and to use them.

Has the Minister legislation in mind?
