Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Returnable Bottles.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the environmental consideration, his Department will support private enterprise in ensuring that returnable bottles are returned.

I am glad to express my support for any measure which will help to reduce the litter problem. The campaign being carried on by some firms to secure the return of glass containers merits the full co-operation of the public and will, I hope, encourage other firms to follow suit.

I might add that I have asked local authorities to consider how, among other measures, means of publicity might be used to seek the co-operation of the public in regard to all aspects of the litter problem.

Would the Minister consider producing a film such as that available on the BBC network in relation to this matter, to be put forward at peak hours on RTE?

I will have the idea considered. I would not be prepared to offer a comment on it because it might cost a very considerable amount of money.
