Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates on Piggeries.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make arrangements to exempt piggeries from assessment for rates purposes.

All farm buildings, including the normal type of piggery, completed on or after 1st March, 1959, are exempt from rates.

So far as certain intensive pig production units are concerned, they have been subject to rates in the normal way but the matter is the subject of court proceedings at present and I do not, therefore, wish to comment on it.

All farm buildings are exempt from valuation and rates. In view of the fact that the pig business is so depressed at the moment, would the Minister consider exempting big pig units from valuation and rates?

I would prefer not to comment in view of the fact that it is at present before the courts.
