Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grand Canal Development.

41.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government the plans approved by Dublin Corporation for the development of the Grand Canal between Suir Road bridge and James's Street harbour, Dublin; and if he will give an indication of when the work is likely to commence.

I am informed that the stretch of the Grand Canal between Suir Road bridge and James's Street harbour which has been closed to navigation has not yet been acquired by Dublin Corporation from CIE but that negotiations for acquisition are proceeding. I understand that the corporation are preparing plans for the development of the disused canal, if and when they acquire it. In the circumstances, no indication can be given as to when work will commence. My Department have no functions in this matter at present.

(Dublin Central): I know on previous occasions it was necessary to have legislation to transfer the canal from the Office of Public Works but I was told recently that the corporation are acquiring this part of the canal without legislation. Can the Minister say if this is so?

That would appear to be the information which I have got in the brief.

(Dublin Central): Are there any plans approved as to what will take place? Will it be playing fields or what have they in mind?

I do not know but they say they have to do considerable drainage and filling works and that discussions have been taking place with local representatives and resident organisations about a linear park. This is something I have no further information about. At this stage it would not come to me.

(Dublin Central): It is important for this particular part of the city, which is very densely populated, that we have some playing fields for the children. I hope that will be taken into consideration.

Is the Minister aware that the corporation have apparently started work on this section of the canal?

I am not so aware.

Question No. 42.

Incidentally, in a reply given by the Minister for Industry and Commerce to Deputy Lemass about this, he said that legislation will not be necessary to enable the canal to be reclaimed.

(Dublin Central): Further arising out of the Minister's reply——

I have called the next question.

On a point of order, the Minister gave a supplementary reply after you called Question No. 42.

Will Deputy Cunningham please allow Question Time to continue? I think Deputy Fitzpatrick will agree I have given him a lot of latitude on this question.

(Dublin Central): This is my final question.

Very good, Deputy.

(Dublin Central): Is the Minister aware that one of the Fine Gael Dublin county councillors has published a report recently that these plans have been finalised. This was stated in the Evening Herald. Would the Minister know anything about that?

I am not so aware.
