Vol. 276 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Supplies.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will arrange for an inquiry into the distribution of sugar during the past six months in view of the fact that, since the recent price increase, sugar has become freely available whereas previously supplies were at a premium; if he will make a statement on the matter.

My information does not fully confirm the Deputy's statement that sugar has become freely available but there are signs that the measures taken to combat the recent shortage are bearing fruit.

As I indicated in reply to an earlier question, I have asked the examiner of restrictive practices to investigate the supply and distribution of sugar with a view to throwing light on the causes of the recent shortage. I expect to receive the examiner's report shortly and I will then consider what further action I should take.
