Vol. 277 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Phoenix Park Tree Planting.

41.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of a recent reply regarding tree planting in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, he will indicate where trees have been planted in the last 18 months, the action taken to gather information concerning the state of health, types and numbers of trees in this park and their location; and whether it is true that, unless action to replant is vigorously pursued, the park will be denuded of trees in a few generations.

Mr. Kenny

In the period referred to by the Deputy a number of trees and shrubs were planted in the grounds of Aras an Uachtaráin and in the People's Gardens and some individual plantings were made throughout the Phoenix Park from the park nursery stock.

The Forest and Wildlife Service of the Department of Lands at the request of the Commissioners of Public Works, have carried out a survey of the trees in the park and their report is under consideration with a view to the preparation of a long term replanting programme.

I am advised that while a replanting programme is necessary there is no danger of the park being denuded of trees as suggested by the Deputy.
