Vol. 277 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Garda Stations.

4.

asked the Minister for Finance when work will commence on the proposed new Garda station in Swords, County Dublin.

Mr. Kenny

It is expected that tenders for the new Garda station will be invited in the next six months and that work on site will be commenced later in the year.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that I put a similar question before the House approximately 12 months ago when I was told that the job would go to tender before the end of last year?

Mr. Kenny

The intention is to site the new station in the yard of the present station and then to demolish the latter. The new station will be a large one. It will accommodate a staff of five sergeants and 18 gardaí. Working drawings are being prepared and will be ready shortly. This is where the Deputy's contribution to the expeditious implementation of this plan comes in: we are awaiting confirmation by Dublin County Council, of which the Deputy is a member, on some minor planning points but meanwhile a quantity surveyor has been appointed and we expect that tenders will be invited about June.

Surely minor points would not hold up the job.

Mr. Kenny

Dublin Corporation are so efficient that even micro-minor points would hold up any job.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to commence building the new Garda station at Lorrha, Nenagh, County Tipperary.

Mr. Kenny

Agreement has been reached on terms for the purchase of a site for a new Garda station at Lorrha but completion of the legal formalities has been delayed because of a problem in regard to the title. It is hoped that this problem will be resolved shortly. Arrangements for the building of the new station will be undertaken as soon as purchase has been completed.
