Vol. 277 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Factory Closure.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the recent closure of a factory (name supplied) in Kilrush, County Clare; and the steps he proposes to take to ensure alternative employment in the area.

I understand that the company mentioned intends closing down its plant in Kilrush, County Clare, at the end of this month. The reason given is recession in the market for the company's products.

The IDA in conjunction with SFADCo is seeking an alternative industry to locate in the Kilrush area.

Is the Minister aware that this factory opened only a few months ago? Was it not apparent at that time that there might be difficulties in this industry?

My information is that the factory was opened more than three months ago. This factory exported 100 per cent of its products to the United Kingdom. Because of the recession during the Christmas period in Britain for the commodities manufactured at that factory they now find themselves in difficulties. SFADCo and the Industrial Development Authority are trying to get an alternative industry for the site in question.

Is the Minister aware that one-fifth of the total labour force in Kilrush town has been laid off recently? Nine hundred and sixty people left the district because of unemployment up to the last census in 1971. Will he ask SFADCo to ensure that the displaced workers secure alternative employment?

This has been happening in every county.

Except Cork.

Including Cork.

(Interruptions.)

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the concern amongst employees of a company (name supplied) in Kilrush, County Clare, regarding future employment prospects at the factory; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the difficulties being experienced by this company and I can understand the concern of the employees. Initial problems have now been resolved but due to a downturn in demand the company has had to cut back its production programme with a consequent reduction in its workforce and the introduction of short-time working. Some further reductions are expected before the company's operations can be stabilised. The Industrial Development Authority are working closely with the company in assisting it through the current difficulties.

Is the Minister aware that a further 14 employees have received notice of termination of employment?

I understand the position——

Will he ask the Industrial Development Authority to find alternative employment for the 1,500 people who are signing at the local employment office in Kilrush for assistance and benefits?

What the Deputy says in the first part of his question is correct. The IDA and SFADCo are working extremely hard to get alternative industries for Kilrush.

I should like to inform the Minister that the president——

The Deputy must ask a question.

Is the Minister aware that the president of this company is investing £50,000? Because of that investment, will the Minister ensure that the promoting agency, SFADCo, works in close liaison with the company to ensure that the displaced workers will be restored to their employment.

I will bring this to the attention of those concerned.
