Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Neo-natal Open Heart Surgery.

4.

asked the Minister for Health if the difference regarding open heart surgery on neo-natal infants between the Mater Hospital and Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin has been resolved.

In reply to a similar question by the Deputy on 5th March, 1974, I informed him that Comhairle na nOspidéal had considered the question of how best the performance of open heart surgery might be organised over the whole range of work in relation to infants, children and adults and that the two hospitals mentioned were engaged in discussions on recommendations made to them by the Comhairle. I understand that the recommendations have since been implemented and that the Comhairle is awaiting a joint report from the two hospitals on their operation.

I let a full year elapse before putting down this question and I want to ask the Parliamentary Secretary now is he saying that some progress is being made but the problem has not yet been resolved?

What I said was quite clear. The recommendations have been implemented and the Comhairle is awaiting a joint report from the two hospitals on their operation.

How much longer will we have to wait?

Not a day longer than I can help.

It is a full year now.
