Vol. 280 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Iascairí Oileáin Árann.

18. D'fhiafraigh

den Aire Talmhaíochta agus Iascaigh cé mhéid airgid a tugadh mar dheontais agus mar iasachtaí d'iascairí Oileán Árann, Contae na Gaillimhe ó 1965 i leith.

With the indulgence of the Chair and of Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn, I propose to reply in English. Grants amounting to £52,244 and loans amounting to £188,249 were paid by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara under the board's marine credit plan to fishermen from Aran Islands, County Galway, during the period from 1965 to date.

In addition, Roinn na Gaeltachta paid grants amounting to £4,450 to fishermen from Aran Islands, County Galway towards the minimum cash deposits on boats purchased by them from An Bord Iascaigh Mhara during the same period.

Nach fiú leis an Runaí Parlaiminte freagairt i nGaelige no an bhfuil sé in ann freagairt i nGaeilge? An bhfuil an Rúnaí Parlaiminte in ann inseach dúinn ce mhéid iarrthóirí ó Oileán Árann a bhí istigh ar iasachtaí nó ar dheontais le h-aghaidh báid nua a cheannach deireadh na bliana seo caite agus tús na bliana seo?

One hundred-and-ninety applications for grants and loans for fishermen from the Aran Islands were received from 1965 to date. Of these 80 applications related to the purchase of small boats such as currachs, and to improvement of boats, outboard engines, winches and so on. The approved applications included also the purchase of larger boats by fishermen from Inishmore. The larger boats were two 56-foot boats in 1965, second-hand; two second-hand 50-foot boats in 1966 and one 56-foot row-boat; in 1968 there was one 56-foot new boat; in 1970, one 57-foot new boat and in 1973 a 72-foot second-hand boat and in 1974 a 65-foot new boat.

An bhfuil an Rúnaí Parlaiminte sásta go bhfuil dóthain airgid ar fáil mar dheontais is mar iasachtaí do na h-iascairí?

Taking into account the availability of funds, I think the Aran Islands are being dealt with fairly and reasonably.

An bhfuil an Rúnaí Parlaiminte sásta go leanfar leis an leibhéal céanna airgid seo a chur ar fáil?

I cannot say for the future but I think that the Government are standing firmly behind the people of the islands.

An bhfuil an Rúnaí Parlaiminte sásta breis airgid a chur ar fáil i dtreo go mbeidh an chabhlach in ann teacht i dtír in Árann nuair a chuimhníonn tú go bhfuil an-droch-chuma ar na céanna ann faoi láthair?

The Aran Islands will be considered for further grants in conjunction with other islands and in conjunction with other disadvantaged areas, if I may use that term. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the Aran people will be dealt with justly.

Ceist a 19— An Teachta O'Malley.
