Vol. 280 No. 2

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance.

182.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange for payment of unemployment assistance to a person (name supplied) in County Cork.

Payment of unemployment assistance is being withheld in this case in recovery of an overpayment of unemployment assistance which arose from the applicant's failure to disclose the ownership of a farm and the renting of additional land for grazing.

183.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will now arrange to have unemployment assistance paid to a person (name supplied) in County Cork who did not receive payment since 28th January, 1975.

Following a reinvestigation, a deciding officer assessed the weekly rate of means in the case of the person concerned at £12.50 with effect from 29th January, 1975. On this assessment he was not entitled to unemployment assistance. He appealed against the decision and an appeals officer on 17th April, 1975 reduced the assessment to £10 with effect from the same date. The applicant furnished evidence of unemployment up to 11th February, 1975 only and following the appeals officer's decision arrangements are being made to pay arrears of assistance due from 29th January to 11th February as soon as possible. It is open to him to renew his application if he is now unemployed.

184.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the cause of the delay in deciding the application for unemployment assistance of a person (name supplied) in County Kerry.

When the person concerned first sought unemployment assistance he was not the holder of a current qualification certificate. This is an essential requirement for entitlement to such assistance. It was necessary to have an application for a certificate completed by him and referred to a social welfare officer for investigation. The delay in issuing a qualification certificate following completion of the officer's inquiries is regretted and this aspect of the matter is being investigated.

All unemployment assistance due to the person concerned was listed for payment at the local post office during the week which commenced on 19th April, 1975, and further payments will continue to be made weekly as they fall due.
