Vol. 280 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Uniforms.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason for the delay of nearly one year in the issue of uniforms to the Garda.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice if all outstanding uniforms have now been issued to the Garda; and if the usual issue of uniforms will be completed this year.

(Cavan): With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 30 together.

I understand that several factors contributed to the delay in the issuing of made-up uniforms over the last 12 months. These included delays in the delivery of the material and insignia and delays in having the material made up.

Most members have now received the current uniform issue and the Post Office Stores say that they understand from the contractor there will be no delay in the delivery of the next issue, which is due to commence this year.

Would the Minister not agree that the delay is due to the Government being broke?

(Cavan): No, but I would agree that there have been delays and that these occurred in the contractors' sphere of operation. I am assured that there will be no further delays.
