Vol. 280 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Garda Station.

33.

andMr. French asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the need for a Garda station in the Gurranebraher/Churchfield area of Cork city; and when it is proposed to set up such a station.

(Cavan): A major reorganisation of the Garda districts in Cork city has been recommended by the research and planning unit of the Garda Síochána. The scheme proposed would involve the erection of several new stations.

Before a final decision is taken on such a major scheme it will be necessary to take into account any relevant recommendations which may be made by management consultants who are presently discharging an assignment in relation to the Garda. I cannot say at this stage how soon it may be possible to make a decision.

Is it not true that more than two years ago the overall position was reviewed regarding the gardaí in Cork city?

(Cavan): It is true that recommendations were made with regard to the overall position in Cork city some time ago and that those recommendations would involve major reorganisation, as I said in the reply. That is being looked into at the moment by consultants and it would be inappropriate to make a statement until their expert advice has been received.

This is an extraordinary state of affairs. We understood that expert advice was sought two years ago and a strong recommendation was made to the Minister for the establishment of Garda stations in a number of areas——

A question please, Deputy.

——including the area referred to in the question. Do I take it from the Minister that there will be another investigation prior to the implementation of the recommendations made two years ago?

(Cavan): It is not correct to say that these submissions were made to the Minister or the Department two years ago. Much more recently recommendations were made and they are now being studied in depth by the consultants and, on receipt of their advice, a decision will be taken.
