Vol. 280 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retail Sales.

2.

(Dublin Central) asked the Taoiseach the volume of retail sales for January, 1975; and how they compare with those for January, 1974.

The information available on the trend in the value of retail sales is given by the monthly index number of retail sales. In January, 1975 this index was 19 per cent higher than the corresponding figure for January, 1974.

While this index of the value of retail sales is compiled each month, there is no corresponding volume index number. Using the price data collected for the compilation of the quarterly consumer price index, it is estimated that the volume of retail sales for January, 1975 was some 2½-3½ per cent below the January, 1974 level.
