Vol. 280 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Clerical Officers.

18.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the discontinuance of Irish as a compulsory subject for recruitment to the civil and public service clerical grades, a similar facility will be extended to applicants in the CIE competition for clerical officers.

Section 35 of the Transport Act, 1950, as amended by section 12 of the Transport Act, 1964, requires that entry to the clerical grades in CIE be by means of competition with Irish as a compulsory subject. It is proposed at the next available opportunity to amend this requirement suitably.

Would the Minister say in what respect it may be amended or what proposals he will be making for amendment?

By the removal of the necessity to have compulsory Irish for entrance to CIE.

There will be no Irish left at all in the country by the time you finish.

Does the Minister not think it would be timely to change the name of CIE, since it stands for Córas Iompair Éireann, and Córas Iompair Éireann might no longer be intelligible to Deputy R. Ryan, Minister for Finance?

That is a separate question.
