Vol. 283 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Transport Regulations.

25.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has noted the objections made by the Confederation of Irish Industry to the introduction of EEC transport regulations on 1st January, 1976; and the action he proposes to take in this matter.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the EEC social regulations relating to road transport which cover such matters as driving hours, qualifications of drivers and so on. I have received representations from the Confederation of Irish Industry about these regulations and the representations are being examined.

When Ireland signed the Treaty of Accession to the EEC, it was accepted in the Treaty that these regulations would be applied in Ireland and furthermore that they would be applied to internal transport in Ireland with effect from 1st January, 1976.

The regulations are at present being reviewed by a working group of the member countries in which this country is participating.
