Vol. 283 No. 8

Business of Dáil.

Before the House rises I wish to refer to next week's sittings. The intention next week is that the Dáil should not sit until 3 o'clock—that is, the ordinary time according to Standing Orders— next Tuesday. That will be a change from our normal procedure or what unfortunately has become normal over the last three or four weeks of sitting at 10.30 on Tuesday mornings, and it will represent a loss in solid debating time for the Wealth Tax Bill of three hours. However, the Government intend to make up the lost three hours by sitting until midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I am not asking the House to order that at the moment; there is no need to make an order because Standing Orders provide that, in default of any other arrangement, the House will meet at 3 o'clock. I merely say it for the information of the House and others whose working depends on the arrangements of the House.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary like to tell us why this had to be done?

I will tell the Deputy when I get the reason why Ministers who have important public engagements are not being paired.

The Dáil adjourned at 5 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 15th July, 1975.
