Vol. 283 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aran Island Ferry.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make arrangements for the replacement of the Aran Island ferry boat Naomh Éanna; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand from CIE that the question of replacing the m.v. Naomh Éanna on the Galway/ Aran Island ferry service is not, per se, under consideration. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the service operated by the m.v. Naomh Éanna is supplemented during the summer months by the m.v. Galway Bay which is chartered by CIE in order to operate a passenger-only service—mainly day trips. The board has informed me that, in view of the limited life expectancy of the m.v. Galway Bay, studies are in progress with a view to determining what pattern and quality of service generally would best meet the long-term needs of the islands.
