Vol. 283 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closure of Firms.

7.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of firms that have gone into voluntary liquidation since March, 1973; and the number that have closed for any other reason.

According to the records filed with the Registrar of Companies and the Registrar of Friendly Societies the number of firms that have gone into voluntary liquidation in the period from March, 1973, to 30th June, 1975, is 484. Of these 301 were solvent companies, one was a solvent Industrial and Provident Society which apparently had never traded and 182 were insolvent companies.

In so far as the Industrial Development Authority are aware, 130 manufacturing firms have closed since March, 1973. According to particulars filed in the Companies Registration Office, 23 of these are accounted for as voluntary liquidations. I have no information about closures (as distinct from winding-up) of firms not engaged in manufacturing.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether this alarming figure since his Government took office has been increasing in the last year?

Which figure?

The 484 that closed.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any figures for involuntary liquidations?

There have been three involuntary winding-ups by the court in 1975, 14 in 1974 and 14 in 1973.

Involuntary?

Yes, they were winding-ups by the court.
