Vol. 284 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Information Services.

1.

andMr. T.J. Fitzpatrick (Dublin Central) asked the Taoiseach the proposals he has for staff changes in the Government Information Services over the next six months.

Mr. Ted Nealon will be taking up duty in mid-September as head of the Government Information Services to replace Mr. Muiris Mac Conghail who is taking up an appointment in RTE. No other staff changes are planned.

Is the Taoiseach satisfied that the Government Information Services will be improved as a result of the proposed change?

I am satisfied that the present high standard will be maintained.

In the Government or in RTE?

In view of the fact that the situation here is the one success of the Coalition Government, will the Taoiseach state if this appointment is an award for services rendered by the director of the Government Information Services who has emulated Lord Haw-Haw in covering for a failing and shattered government administration?

Most of that question is out of order but appointments made by RTE are a matter for RTE.

Will the Taoiseach state if it is true that the appointment of an assistant director of RTE has been made simply as a watchdog for the Government?

As I said, RTE appointments are a matter for RTE.

Will the Taoiseach clarify a matter that is of great interest in the Gaeltacht areas? Is it the intention of the new ceannaire of Radio na Gaeltachta to reside in the Gaeltacht in Connemara, as was the practice with previous cinnirí? I realise this is a matter for RTE but perhaps the Taoiseach could clarify that matter.

I do not know.

Is the Taoiseach aware if RTE are completely satisfied with the new appointment?

RTE made the appointment. I take it they are satisfied with it; otherwise they would not have made it.
