Vol. 285 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Street Parking.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will initiate legislation which will give local authorities greater power to prevent lorries from parking on the streets in residential areas.

Powers are available under the Road Traffic Acts, 1961 and 1968, enabling the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána, by means of bye-laws made by him after consultation with the local authority concerned and with my consent, to control and regulate the parking of vehicles of any class in respect of any specified area. Under section 62 of the 1968 Act such powers may be transferred to a local authority in respect of their area.

If the local authorities decide, as they should decide in many cases, that certain commercial vehicles should not be parked in residential areas and if they decide to provide parking places for such vehicles, would the Minister consider giving grants to the local authorities to meet half of the costs involved?

Sin ceist eile.

It is not.
