Vol. 285 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Roscommon School.

387.

asked the Minister for Education when his Department will sanction a grant for repairs to Brosna national school, Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, in view of the deplorable condition of the sewage and water and the parents' concern for their children's health.

The enrolments in Scoil Mhuire, Brosna, having fallen below the figure which would warrant the continued employment of two teachers, the assistant teacher there was placed on the diocesan panel on 1st July, 1975. This means that the teacher in question will be required to accept the first vacancy for an assistant teacher occurring in the diocese as from 1st October, 1975, whereupon Scoil Mhuire will become a one-teacher school.

In these circumstances consideration is being given to the closing of the school and its amalgamation with another school in the parish. Arrangements will be made, in consultation with the school management, for an inspector of my Department to meet the parents to discuss the matter with them.

Only minimum essential repairs to the school could be authorised and it would be preferable to await the outcome of the meeting before incurring any expenditure.
