Vol. 285 No. 3

Written Answers. - Compulsory Blood Tests.

478.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will introduce legislation whereby those accused of prostitution would have to undergo compulsory blood tests and any necessary treatment for diseases.

I do not consider that it would be defensible to have a provision which would oblige persons to undergo medical tests and treatment for disease simply because they were accused of certain offences, since, for one thing, an accused person is presumed to be innocent until his guilt is proved in court.

If legislation of the kind suggested was justified on health grounds, consideration of it would not be a matter primarily for me as Minister for Justice.
