Vol. 285 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution Problems.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that Irish pollution problems are quite different than those which prevail in Central Europe, he will sponsor an advertising campaign to eliminate ignorance of the effects on climate and health of the gradual accumulation of pollutants such as dust and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; and if he will give an approximate estimate of the cost per annum to the nation of pollution in the atmosphere and the savings that might be effected if this pollution were eliminated.

As I explained to the Deputy in reply to a similar question on the 23rd May, 1974, I have no plans for an advertising campaign of this kind and such an estimate is not available.

Would it not be possible for the Minister to reach a conclusion whether a campaign of this nature would be to the national benefit or to the benefit of the taxpayer? Is it not the responsibility of his Department to know the answer to such questions?

I do not consider that such a campaign would be either to the national benefit or to the benefit of the taxpayer.
