Vol. 286 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Ombudsman.

41.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if the Government have given any further consideration to the appointment of an ombudsman; and if so, when it is proposed to proceed with such an appointment.

Since the Deputy last raised this issue, the whole question of the appointment of an ombudsman and the related question of the general arrangements for dealing with citizens' grievances arising out of administrative decisions have been debated on a Private Member's motion on 6th and 7th May last. During the course of that debate I mentioned that the Government had been giving consideration to the possible institutional solutions. While I cannot yet put definitive proposals before the House, I would hope soon to be in a position to indicate the Government's considered views on the matter.
