Vol. 286 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fisheries Acts Offences.

9.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has reached a decision concerning increased penalties for certain offences under the Fisheries Acts, 1959 to 1964; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This matter is still under consideration.

This type of answer is very unsatisfactory. Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is now a certain amount of agitation to have him take action on the lines indicated in my question?

I am sure the Deputy is aware that it is my intention and the intention of the Government to update fishery legislation. We hope to have a Bill before the House in the coming year and matters such as those referred to by the Deputy will be dealt with in that Bill.

Will it be introduced in the next session?

Not in the next session but as early as possible.

It will be introduced some time next year, if we live long enough.

I hope the Deputy will live much longer than that.
