Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 4 Dec 1975

Vol. 286 No. 6

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: Nos. 1, 10, Votes 16 and 28 to 33, inclusive, No. 11 (resumed). Votes 28 to 33 will be debated together. The Dáil will sit next week as follows: Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 10.30 p.m., Wednesday, 10.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. and Thursday, 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It was my intention earlier this week to ask the Government to make time available for the usual debate on the adjournment. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach indicated yesterday that it was the intention to adjourn either this day fortnight or tomorrow fortnight. I hoped the Taoiseach would be present so that I could notify him direct. I would like to hear from the Tánaiste if he can now indicate if time will be given for the usual adjournment debate prior to the Christmas recess.

Perhaps I might be allowed to reply to the question asked by the Leader of the Opposition. The Government have not yet considered if they will make time available for an adjournment debate. I am not sure I should acquiesce in Deputy Lynch's description of it as a usual adjournment debate because the Dáil has been getting somewhat out of the habit of having adjournment debates in recent sessions and the need for them is perhaps less marked now that very much more time is made available to the Opposition by way of Private Members' Time. I will ask the Taoiseach to deal with the question of the Leader of the Opposition and to make an early statement in the House about it.

May I in that context remind the Parliamentary Secretary that our request for an adjournment debate before the summer recess was refused also?

I recall that.
