Levy grant schemes have been in operation in seven industrial sectors for periods ranging from 18 months to five years. The schemes are revised each year to bring them into line with the current training requirements of the sector concerned.
The levy grant system is one which, in my view, is unlikely to require continued application in its present form for an indefinite period. I am satisfied, however, that the value of such a system in Irish circumstances is far from exhausted. My Department, in conjunction with the training authority, keeps the training situation generally, including the levy-grant system, under continuing review to see whether changes in the levy-grant system would be desirable and whether any alternative approach to raising training standards would be more productive.
