Vol. 286 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Absenteeism.

27.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that 36 per cent of all absences from work occur on Mondays; and if he has any proposals to reduce this percentage for that particular day of the week.

I am aware of the figure quoted by the Deputy which was published in an IPC report on absenteeism in Irish industry.

High absence rates generally are attributable to a number of factors including lack of job satisfaction, lack of participation and involvement in decision-making and generally rigid and inflexible personnel policies. Policies being pursued by the Government at present should assist workers generally to improve their working conditions and increase their involvement in decision-making.
