Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the total net emigration for each year since 1952.

Estimates of net migration are compiled for intercensal periods by relating successive population figures compiled from censuses of population to data for births and deaths in the same periods. The following are the average annual net emigration figures in each intercensal period since 1951: 1951 to 1956, 39,353; 1956 to 1961, 42,400; 1961 to 1966, 16, 121; 1966 to 1971, 10,781.

For the period since the last census the only indicators of net migration are the figures of net passenger movement by sea and air. These figures indicate that in recent years there has been a small inward flow, that is, immigration.
