Vol. 286 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Truck Acts.

7.

asked the Minister for Labour when he intends to initiate legislation to amend the outdated Truck Acts.

Outline proposals for a measure to permit payment of wages by cheque or similar instrument are being finalised in my Department at present.

When will these arrangements be finalised and is the Minister aware how outdated these Acts and the restrictive practices that obtain under them are from the point of view of the issue of payment to employees?

We have, in fact, outline proposals for a Bill and I presume it will be a matter of pressure of business when it comes before the House, but I imagine the next session will see it through.

The Minister is aware of the restrictions that apply.

I am. There was a committee that sat away back in the 1960s and away back in 1964 the Minister for Finance recommended to the Minister for Industry and Commerce that amendment of the Truck Acts should be undertaken without delay.
