Vol. 286 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Dispute.

3.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of a long drawn-out strike at a premises in Merrion Square, Dublin, (name supplied); and if he will make a statement on the present position and the efforts taken by him to resolve the dispute.

(Cavan): Arising from separate discussions which I had with the parties to the dispute, both sides agreed to submit the dispute to the Labour Court for investigation. The court's investigation was held on 19th November, 1975, and a recommendation was issued on the same day. I understand that the recommendation has been accepted by both sides and that the dispute is now over.

In view of the prolonged nature of this dispute and the particular problems which arose, is the Minister considering introducing legislation enabling people to join unions if they wish?

That seems to be a separate matter.

(Cavan): That seems to be a separate question.

It is relevant to this dispute. It is certainly tied deeply to what happened in this case.
