Vol. 287 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Cargo Clearance.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange for the improvement of customs and other facilities in order to ensure that imported cargo will be cleared more efficiently, thereby expediting the passage of cargo ships through Dublin and other major Irish ports and effecting a reduction in freight charges.

I am not aware of delays attributable to the customs in the clearance of imported goods. Normally customs examination of properly completed entries is finished within 24 hours of their submission by the importers. In addition, there are special arrangements which, if properly availed of by importers, would ensure speedier clearance. Details of these arrangements are set out in Notice No. 1369 which is available from any Collector of Customs and Excise or from the Revenue Commissioners, Dublin Castle. If the Deputy will let me have particulars of any cases involving delays which he thinks are attributable to the customs I will undertake to have them investigated.

It is clear the Parliamentary Secretary does not have to do customs clearance. Is he aware there is a great stoppage due to this trade dispute?

I have told the Deputy that if he gives me details I will let him have the replies. I will let him have a copy of form No. 1369.
