Vol. 287 No. 9

Written Answers. - Offaly Workers Lay-off.

89.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that 68 employees of a firm (name supplied) in Clara, County Offaly, have received notice of termination of employment due to expire on 13th February and a further 120 employees are also threatened with such notice; and if he proposes to take any action to prevent this massive lay-off in an already depressed area.

I am aware that the firm in question are at present experiencing serious difficulties. They have been carrying out a detailed assessment of their activities and are now reorganising their operations. The objective is to ensure the survival of the firm and to maintain employment at the highest level consistent with economic and efficient operation. Unfortunately a reduction in the number employed is one of the measures which the company see as necessary.

The Industrial Development Authority and Fóir Teoranta are maintaining close contact with the firm with a view to assisting them to overcome their present difficulties.
