Vol. 288 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Royal and Grand Canals.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance the plans on hand for the acquisition, improvement and maintenance of the Royal and Grand Canals; and when acquisition will be undertaken.

The future of the Grand and Royal Canals is still under consideration and until a decision is reached I am not in a position to say if either or both of the canals will be transferred into the charge of the Office of Public Works.

I am disappointed with the answer. No matter how many times I put down such a question I get the same answer. Apparently, the Government cannot make up their mind on this important matter. Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Royal Canal is deteriorating all the time and that it has been filled in so much that there is very little of the canal left? There is a certain degree of urgency in the matter. Would the Parliamentary Secretary press the Minister to do something about it?

As Deputy Moore knows, it is the Minister for Transport and Power who should be dealing with this question. The future of both canals is vested in CIE.

That is an even worse answer to get.
