Vol. 288 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - People's Attitude to Environment.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will conduct a national survey in order to try to define the attitude of people in Ireland to the environment.

It is evident from the increasing attention to environmental questions in the public media, and in the activities of community groups of all kinds that people are more aware of environmental matters and that they are anxious that natural resources should be preserved from pollution. I believe that there is also a better appreciation of the need to achieve a proper balance between the requirements for environmental protection and those for furthering the development process and the fostering of employment. I have no doubt that these welcome trends are due, to a significant degree, to the increasing attention which the Government are giving to the environment, as evidenced by the legislative programme, and our involvement in the EEC action programme on the environment. I have no plans for a survey on the lines referred to by the Deputy.
