Vol. 288 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Taxation.

19.

andMr. Gogan asked the Minister for Local Government the expected increase in revenue arising from the rounding up to the next 50p on motor taxation charges.

The rounding up or down of quarterly and six monthly rates has been a regular feature of motor tax regulations and is not designed for revenue purposes but rather to facilitate administration of the system.

It would not be possible to furnish a reliable estimate of the effect of the recent change in the method of rounding up and down, and in particular of one aspect of it. I would remind the Deputies that in a number of cases the quarterly and six monthly rates are either rounded down from 24p or are exact calculations at units of 50p and that it is only in some cases that there is a rounding up.

As there is not much revenue involved, would the Minister's social conscience allow him to give a pro rata rate for quarterly taxes on motor cars because it is the workers in the poorer sections of the community who cannot afford to tax their cars for the year who are caught under this regulation?

That was not the question asked. The question bears no reference whatever to what the Deputy is talking about now.

Is the Minister saying that in some cases these figures are rounded down?

Any amount under 25p is rounded down and over 25p is rounded up.
