andMr. MacSharry asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of the road fund grants allocated to each local authority for each of the years 1975 and 1976.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Fund Grants.
As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report. Following is the statement:—

* In addition to the amount of road grants shown, a sum of £705,000 will be allocated during the course of 1976 for approved bridge works, and so on.
Would the Minister mind giving the figures for Cork County for this year and last year?
The Deputy had better wait for this information, as the Deputies who asked the question are doing. It would be unfair to give Deputy G. Fitzgerald an advantage over his colleagues who put down the question.
If the Minister has no objection would he please give those two figures from the tabular statement?
Deputy MacSharry will be delighted to give the Deputy those figures in a few moments.
Is the Minister ashamed to give the figures?
No.
The fact that the figure is down by £250,000——
The Deputy does not know what he is talking about.
Had the Minister taken note of the fact that more than three-quarters of the traffic of Ireland travels through Kildare when he allocated money for that county? Is he aware that our roads are in a frightful condition, not through any fault of the county council but because we need money badly from the Local Government coffers?
I agree that the roads in Kildare could be better but Deputy Power, being a fair man, will agree that it did not happen over the last three years. Those roads have not been brought up to the standard over a long period. What I have done this year was to give permission to councils, such as Kildare, to spend more money on county roads where, I understand, money is very badly needed.
I would like to point out two things that happened within the last three years.
A question please, Deputy.
Is the Minister aware that the plans for the by-passing of Naas which had been going on for quite a long time have now been scrapped and a motorway which it was hoped would travel through his own constituency and skirt Leixlip, Maynooth and Celbridge, is a very doubtful matter now? That happened within the very recent past.
Deputy Power does not have his facts quite correct. The motorway he is talking about has not reached more than the planning stage. There are still several alternatives being considered. It has not reached my office at any time.
What about the Naas plan? It reached the Minister's office.
If the Deputy puts down a question I will be glad to give him the full details about the Naas project, including some facts which the Deputy might not like to hear repeated here.
The Minister's councillors raised this matter at our county council meeting.
That is a statement, not a question.
It is a sad fact that the Deputy listens to people who do not know what they are talking about and then repeats it here.
Order.
On a point of order, is it right for a Minister to say consistently that a Deputy does not know what he is talking about?
It depends on the Deputy.
That is not a point of order.
When one thinks how thin-skinned the Minister is——
That is not in order. This is Question Time.
Send it to the Committee on Procedure and Privileges.
The last time Deputies went to the Committee on Procedure and Privileges they did not like the result.
