Vol. 288 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Staff Vacancies.

28.

andMr. Power asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of staff vacancies in his Department on 1st January, 1976.

There were seven vacancies in my Department on 1st January, 1976.

Would the Minister like to say in what grades?

One assistant principal, two higher executive officers, one staff officer, two clerical officers and one cleaner.

Would the Minister indicate what efforts have been made to fill those vacancies?

The normal steps are being taken by the Civil Service Commissioners.

Have the vacancies been filled since 1st January?

No, but the steps necessary to fill them are being taken. It is an extremely small percentage considering that the number of people involved under my responsibility in the Department of the Public Service is 507.

Does the Minister not agree that when you have a small number, it is all the more reason why it should be easy to fill the vacancies? I am sure the Minister is not short of applicants.

Steps are being taken to fill them.
