Vol. 290 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Directory Entries.

18.

(Dublin Central): asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the percentage of entries in the telephone directory altered each year.

Around 30 per cent in recent years, including about 10 per cent in respect of new entries.

(Dublin Central): Is the Minister satisfied that the publication of an annual directory is necessary?

The publication of an annual directory is in the interests of the public. Most other administrations which can maintain this, do maintain it, and I certainly would like to maintain it. To replace it by a system of issuing supplementary books would involve subscribers in the inconvenience of consulting two volumes and would lead to extra directory inquiries and probably not to any significant economies.

(Dublin Central): Is it a 30 per cent increase or a 10 per cent increase?

Thirty per cent of entries altered including about 10 per cent in respect of new entries.
