Vol. 291 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Hauling Grounds.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when money will be provided for the clearing of the hauling grounds at the junction of Cromane Upper and Dooks, Glenbeigh, County Kerry.

My Department are at present examining the likely expenditure on the 1976 programme of fishery harbour works and in the light of this examination it may be possible to provide funds this year for the work referred to by the Deputy.

I have been given this reply twice during the past 12 months. What is the reason for the delay? The grounds are covered with heavy rocks. Can the Parliamentary Secretary state when we are likely to get a grant?

The Deputy did not get this reply previously. My previous rely was that I hoped to be in a position to make a decision later. In view of the representations made I have taken the decision that it would be desirable to remove the rocks in the area in question. I will make an appropriate grant to Kerry County Council for carrying out that work. As I indicated, if it is possible, the job will be done this year, and if not, early next year. My reply today is positive. I have completed my examination, and money is being made available for this work.

This is an urgent matter. The livelihoods of many fishermen are at stake. The Department have been very slow in granting the money required for this work. The heavy rocks in this area are destroying the fishermen's nets and they are trying to haul fish in between the rocks. I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary to do everything in his power to get a grant immediately.

I can assure the Deputy that we will remove the rocks. It is desirable to have them removed. The rocks have been there since the beginning of time and they were there when Fianna Fáil were in office——

I want to correct one statement.

A statement would be out of order, Deputy.
