Vol. 291 No. 10

Written Answers. - Travelling Families Education.

49.

asked the Minister for Education the action he proposes to take on the recommendations contained in a report on the education of the children of travelling families submitted to him by the National Council for Travelling People; and when he proposes to take action.

The report to which the Deputy refers is a progress report submitted recently by the National Co-Ordinator for Education of the National Council for Travelling People. The report was submitted in the context of a policy document issued by my Department in 1970 arising out of the report of the Commission on Itinerancy and it reflects the policy lines laid down in that document. It records the progress achieved to date and indicates areas in which further development is required. The programme of development is being implemented progressively in accordance with the resources available and the inherent difficulty of coping with the circumstances of some of the families involved.
